Yes, I thought a lot about my trip to L.A., the fascination of seeing a beat up Ethopian restaurant shoe-horned in to a grimy strip mall, a gaggle of Iranian Jewish men in traditional garb negotiating a 10-lane throughaway after a Sabbath service. Don't get me wrong: I despised Los Angeles. And yet I wanted to move there immediately, because that Californian megalopolis is the future, frightening and sublime.
